Egyptian rowing is back again at an international level

After an absence of fourteen years, the 26th edition of the Egyptian Rowing tournament took place again in the city of Luxor city of with 350 male and female athletes representing nineteen countries from the Middle East, Africa, Europe and USA participating. They competed in sixteen different events in two categories, 500 metre and 1000 metre.Egypt won seven gold medals, six silver and one bronze in the 1000m category while in the 500 meter race Egypt won four gold medals, three silver and two bronze.
In the overall standings Egypt came in at first place with 12 gold, nine silver and three bronze while Tunisia came in second with two gold and one silver and France in the third place with one gold and one silver. Cyprus was in fourth place with one gold and one bronze and Sweden in the fifth place with one gold. Eng.Hassan Sakr, the president of the National Sports Council and the president of the Supreme Council of the championship stressed the request made to Councillor Khaled Zin el Din, president of the African and Arabic Rowing federations and manager of the championship to make this event a regular annual event and he wished to see it grow and expand to include more countries.


Several international sports personalities attend the race in Luxor including Denis Oswald president of the World Rowing federation, Ammar Addadi, president of the Mediterranean Games Ccommittee, Denis Masly president of the National Olympic Committee, (NOC) of France, Samih Modalal president of the Syrian NOC as well as Matt Smith the executive manager of the Rowing World federation. All expressed their appreciation of the good organisation and the high level of competition.
The tournament was a good opportunity to gather more awareness and support for Egyptian bid file for hosting the 2017 Mediterranean games.


Dr. Safa el Din Saleh, president of the Egyptian Rowing federation honoured the late champion Aly Ibrahim who passed away at the age of 35 last March. Councillor Khaled Zin el Din contributed much to the success of the event and also made an important gesture by being very close to the Tunisian team as this event took place at the same time of the latest political changes in Tunisia. The Tunisian team were worried about availability of air flights back to their home but with strong follow up and efforts of counselor Khaled Zin El Din they felt very much at home and every single obstacle was solved.
Eng. Sakr confirmed that the Tunisian team should consider Egypt their second home as they are most welcome and everybody will look out for them.
