Men’s Open at Stella di Mare
A full field of 72 players graced the links of Stella Di Mare for their 2nd Annual Men’s Open ‘Starfish Trophy’ On Friday 14th & Saturday 15th January. Over the two days of testing conditions, Soliman El Asser prevailed as the 2011 Champion. An
Impressive first day score of 69 (-3) from El Asser ensured a commanding position at the top of the leaderboard closely followed by Mamdouh Sheikh who fired an opening 71 (-1) to remain within touching distance for the start of the second day’s play. The duel for the title turned into a ‘two horse race’ although impressive performances of note from Mike Adly (80 +73=153) and Taymour Scarello (76+77 = 153) did keep the two leaders on their toes! The contest was becoming an even closer affair and both Sheikh and El Asser often changed places at the top of the leaderboard on the back 9 of the final days play. It was El Asser who prevailed with two late birdies on holes 15 and 16 to each in front and he managed to substain this two shot advantage onto the 18th where a steady Par secured victory. It is now El Asser’s 2nd victory on the EGF schedule and he cements his place at the top of the Order of Merit.
In his victory speech, El Asser praised the organisers for an excellent conditioned golf course and tournament organisation plus superb service and quality within the Hotel.
The Nett prize was awarded to Junior Golfer Karl Marco who made the long journey from Alexandria to compete and was justly awarded. The popular youngster who had allot of support from fellow Alexandria players who also made the journey, shot nett rounds of 70 + 68 to edge out fellow Junior Golfer Saphir Gohar by two shots.
