Sports and the Environment
The clean revolution
The momentous events of January and February that culminated in the unseating of an unpopular government and the demand for a new governing system, also resulted in the very people that had precipitated the revolution in Egypt with their demonstrations on the street taking one of the first steps in the new order for the country by themselves:They spontaneously cleaned up the mess that had accumulated during the many days of protest by themselves.
This occurred not only in Tahrir square, but all over Egypt as the local neighbourhood watch groups dusted and swept and carted off the refuse. In Hurghada, the clean up was not just limited to the streets of the city but to the off-shore islands in the Red
Sea and even underwater as well.
Normally in this space, we write about sports and the environment and frequently report on the
initiatives that the International Olympic Committee and others promote to make sports environmentally friendly. People in the sports sector are protective of the environment because they have discovered that if the environment is clean they are healthier and perform better as athletes.
The same should hold true for the newly democratised Egyptians. The country was not theirs before it was controlled by a corrupt regime that looked only to its own benefit and not to the welfare of the people. Now, the country belongs to the people
and with possession comes responsibility. Protecting the environment is part of that responsibility. The youth of Egypt have made their political voice heard and we look forward to the continuing growth of a safe, open, free and clean society.
